Celebrating World Chocolate Day and the Global Love for Chocolate

On July 7 chocolate lovers worldwide come together to commemorate World Chocolate Day, one of the most popular confections in the world. This joyous occasion honors chocolates rich heritage cultural significance and sheer decadence for people of all ages.

Background of World Chocolate Day

Founded in 2009 World Chocolate Day commemorates the purported anniversary of the day that this famous dessert arrived in Europe for the first time in 1550. Candy shops and regional suppliers place their best-loved products on sale on this day all over the world so that everyone young and old can have a taste.

From the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree chocolate is made. Since at least three millennia ago cacao has been grown in Mexico, Central America and Northern South America. Nonetheless 70% of the world’s growing cacao trees are found in Africa. Around 1100 BC the use of cacao seeds was first observed. The tree seeds need to be fermented to develop their flavor because they have a very strong bitter taste.

When seeds from a cacao tree are covered with banana leaves and allowed to ferment they are referred to as cocoa beans and used to make chocolate bars. Upon reaching their processing facility the cocoa beans undergo a slow roasting process at a low temperature. In order to grind the nibs into a fine powder known as cocoa liquor – basically just raw chocolate – it is then necessary to separate the shells from the nibs. Whether or not additional ingredients are present the cocoa mass is frequently liquefied and molded. You can get chocolate liquor in this state. After that the chocolate liquor is separated into cocoa solids and cocoa butter.

This cocoa liquor paste yields the two most important products for the manufacturing of chocolate. Cocoa butter is made so that producers can use it as an ingredient in their chocolate bars while cocoa powder is made and packaged for sale at supermarkets so that we can bake the cherished roasted taste profile into our cakes and cookies.

Numerous studies on this edible gem have revealed that it is a potent antioxidant as well as a blood flow enhancer, blood pressure reducer and heart disease risk reducer. Additionally it raises levels of dopamine and serotonin which improve mood. Because dark chocolate has health benefits many people are encouraged to eat more of it. Hot chocolate milk chocolate cake and brownies chocolate candy bars and many other treats that we enjoy today are all made with chocolate.

Cocoa liquor cocoa butter and sugar are the basic ingredients of dark chocolate which has the flavor closest to that of its mother seed. These three ingredients along with a small amount of milk powder make up milk chocolate. Chocolate makers can now enhance the flavor profile by adding ingredients like nuts, salts and syrups. After cooling the mixtures solidify into the shapes of their corresponding molds, are packaged in paper and are then sent to our favorite retail establishments and confectioneries.

Chocolate Making

Making cocoa beans into the smooth delicious treat we are familiar with today is a painstaking art. Ripe cocoa pods are harvested first and when they are cracked open cocoa beans are revealed. To create the cocoa mass that serves as the foundation for chocolate products these beans are fermented, dried roasted and ground. Dark milk white and other varieties of chocolate can be made by combining cocoa mass with sugar milk and other ingredients.

Beyond just being delicious chocolate has cultural significance all over the world. A popular snack and dessert chocolate is also essential to gift-giving social customs and culinary traditions in many cultures. For instance chocolatiers in Switzerland which is well-known for its exquisite chocolate craftsmanship combine innovation and tradition to produce mouthwatering treats. Chocolate makers in Belgium create exquisite truffles and pralines that appeal to palates all over the world.
