According to NCRB data, there were a shocking 4,45,256 reported cases of crimes against women in 2022. This means that, on average, 51 FIRs were filed every hour, with 87 women falling victim to sexual assault each day.

India is a nation where women are worshipped as Goddesses whereas India is where most of the crimes against women occur. On one side, women are referred to as ‘Devis’; on the other, women are getting raped. 2-3 years of girl child are getting raped. Isn’t it’s is disgusting? What these men really want!

According to the 2021 research report National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), one woman is getting raped every 2-3 minutes, while a dowry death occurs every hour. Women are constantly told to be aware, to stay vigilant. But who exactly are they being warned about? It’s not just about you or me—it’s about the predatory eyes that follow women everywhere. These eyes lurk in every corner of society. They could be behind you, in your workplace, at college, within your family, or even among your friends. These eyes can belong to anyone. They are the real threat that women face every day. According to NCRB data, there were a shocking 4,45,256 reported cases of crimes against women in 2022. This means that, on average, 51 FIRs were filed every hour, with 87 women falling victim to sexual assault each day. According to the 2021 annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 31677 rape cases were registered across the country which means an average of 86 cases daily. India recorded an average of 87 rape cases daily in 2019 and 4,05,861 cases of crime against women during the year, a rise of over 7% from 2018, according to the latest government data released on September 29, 2020.

In India, justice for rape cases is not given on time according to the analysis. It takes a lot of time to provide justice to a rape victim. Many victims never even go to court, believing it’s a waste of time. They know that justice won’t come easily. For eg. Nirbhaya Gang Rape Case, everyone is aware of the 12 years old horrifying rape case which took 7 years to give justice. This will lead to an increase in crime because criminals are not scared of what They are doing.

A woman steps Into journalism to ignite change and challenge the wrongs in society; a woman becomes a doctor to save lives, a teacher to illuminate minds with education. Yet, what does she encounter in return? She is subjected to the horrific reality of crimes like rape. Women are not safe in their own nation. It is the government’s responsibility to enforce stringent laws that deter anyone from even considering harming a woman. Additionally, justice for rape victims must be swift, with rapists facing nothing less than lifetime imprisonment or equally severe punishment.

As we mark 78 years of independence this August 15th, 2024, we must ask ourselves: what kind of freedom are we truly celebrating?

Is it the freedom to sexually harass a woman at her workplace?

Is it the freedom to disguise a rape as a suicide?

Is it the freedom to suppress those who dare to challenge injustice?

Or is it the freedom to stay silent until the violence hits someone you know personally?
