Kiara Chettri, a 17-year-old with a 10 track album and 6 singles under her name
The grandeur of grief as an emotion, as well as the songs of English artist Sam Smith, served as inspiration for Kiara Chettri, a seventeen-year-old budding singer-songwriter. Kiara Chettri has finished the release of her first full-length album, 4 am, about half a year ago, and received a lot of praise and recognition for her skill as a young singer-songwriter. Her time in the music industry has been “amazing, overwhelming, and motivating,” in her own words. Now, she has released her single, ‘Why’ which is a track that captures the grandeur of sadness. It is amazing in itself that someone as young as 17 has the knack to understand such strengthened emotions.
We got a chance to chat with Kiara and here’s what she said
Q1. Tell us a bit about yourself and how did you discover your passion for music?
KC: I am a 17-year-old singer and songwriter from Gurgaon and am currently studying at The Shri Ram School – Aravali in class 12. My passion for music started growing at the age of 13. I was not interested in music at all before that, although I was learning music. At the age of 13, I gave my Grade 8 vocals exam from Trinity and did well. That was when I knew that music was what I wanted to pursue as my career.
Kiara Chettri telling about her music journey and her biggest achievements
KC: I started releasing songs at the age of 15. Before that, I learned how to play as many instruments as I could to accompany my singing. I wrote my first song, ‘You’ll See’ at the age of 14 and released it, at the age of 15. It was not easy to release my first song. I was so nervous and scared as to how people would perceive me. As I released more songs, I started gaining more confidence and learnt how to ignore hate comments. My biggest accomplishment till now has been- appearing on the main page for Rolling Stone India website last year in November after my debut album ‘4am’ was out.

Kiara Chetri telling about your recently released single, ‘Why’ and the inspiration behind that song
“Oh it’s been a while, Why haven’t you called,
Why haven’t you cried, Oh oh oh tell me why,
why aren’t you here, Coz I’m not alright ” – Kiara Chettri, Why
KC: Why is it a song about feeling alone. The feeling of losing someone in your life and how much it hurts you is the main feeling of this song. This song is an adult contemporary song. The lyrics convey a feeling of loneliness and sadness. The music gives a very orchestral and grand feel to heighten the feelings and emotions of the song and lyrics. I was inspired by a lot of Sam Smith’s songs for Why. The way he portrays the emotions of his songs is incredible. The main inspiration behind the lyrics of Why was the theme of loss. Whether it was losing someone or someone leaving you, we all have felt some kind of loss in our lives so I wrote a song that everyone can relate to.
Kiara’s Inspiration in life
KC: I find inspiration in the smallest of things around me and I try to make every song of mine sound different from the other. A lot of people have helped me and inspired me throughout my journey. My friends and family inspire me every single day and motivate me to do better. As for artists, I am inspired by so many. Taylor Swift will always be one songwriter who will always inspire me. I try to learn as much as I can from every song or artist I come across.
Kiara’s strengths and weaknesses
KC: I have a lot of strengths and weaknesses. I don’t think I would be who I am without my strengths or my weaknesses. My biggest strength would be creativity. I take inspiration from the smallest things around me and try to better myself every day and I am so grateful to have been given the gift of creativity. As for my weaknesses, I am an overthinker. I do get anxious a lot and overthink a lot. I have been trying to control that and better myself so that I can stay calm.
Kiara Chettri’s Your favourite artists.
KC: I love all kinds of artists and listen to all genres. My favourite artists would be, Little Mix, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Alanis Morissette and so many more.
