India has a long history of women who have broken gender stereotypes and emerged victorious in a male-dominated world. They have continued to do so in 2019 and make us proud, both at the national and international levels. Here, we will look at those 5 Indian women in 2019 who made the country proud.
1. Dutee Chand
Dutee Chand became the first Indian women track and field athlete to clinch a gold medal at the 30th Summer University Games in Napoli, Italy. Before this, the national record holder also won the 100m dash event in July 2019. She clocked 11.32 seconds to win the gold as she led the race from start to finish. She is only the second woman after Hima Das to win a gold medal in a global event. She came out and declared that she was in a same-sex relationship with someone in May 2019.
2. M Vanitha and Ritu Karidhal
In the history of India’s space mission history, the Chandrayaan-2 was spearheaded by two women. M Vanitha and Ritu Karidhal gave India a proud moment when India launched its second mission, Chandrayaan-2 to the moon. Muthayya Vanitha was the project director and Ritu Karidhal was the mission director of the incredible mission.

3. Hima Das
The ace-racer, Hima Das won five successive gold medals in different meets across the Czech Republic and Poland within 20 days in July. She topped the podium in 200m race four times and once in the 400m race. The 19-year-old sprinter is the second-fastest Asian, featuring in the top-10 under-20 runners in the world in the discipline in 2019.
4. Saalumarada Thimmakka- Mother of trees
The President of Indian Ram Nath Kovind awarded Saalumarada Thimmakka Padma Shri, fourth highest civilian award in India, for her amazing work to make the planet green. The 106-year-old environmentalist planted 8000 trees in 80 years. She even featured in the BBC’s most influential and inspirational 100 women.
5. PV Sindhu
PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win gold in BWF World Badminton Championship on August 25. She defeated a familiar rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan by 21-7, 21-7 in a lop-sided final in Basel within 38 minutes. India’s face in Badminton, PV Sindhu is also the joint-most successful women’s singles at the world meets for winning 5 medals in just six appearances.
