Blood Type Is Linked To Pregnancy Issues And Causes Problem If Not Compatible
Pregnancy is a precious time in anyone’s life and it is important that things go right when planning or having a baby. One of the most common issues which couples should be aware of is how blood type is linked to pregnancy issues. But, what does that mean? How can blood type cause issues in the baby? Let’s find out!
But, before we begin let us understand a term called ‘Rh factor.’
The Rh factor is a protein and is found on the surface of RBC (red blood cells). A person can be Rh-positive or Rh negative. If your RBC has this protein, you are Rh positive and if not you are Rh negative.
This is usually indicated by the positive and negative blood groups. The Rh status is reflected in the blood group of the person.
I found out that my blood is special. A blood but the rhesus factor (Rh) is negative. As we know, Rh positive is much more common than Rh negative.
However, having an Rh-negative blood type is not an illness, and it usually doesn’t affect our health. But it can affect pregnancy. pic.twitter.com/JgaNPrPfjI

So what is the problem?
If the mother is Rh negative and the fetus is Rh positive, it is known as Rh incompatibility. When the blood of the Rh-positive fetus enters the bloodstream of the mother (who is Rh-negative), the automatic response of the body is to make anti-Rh antibodies to destroy the Rh-positive. This becomes a huge problem as these antibodies will attack the fetus’s blood cells. In extreme cases, it can even cause the death of the newborn.
Is there a solution to this?
Yes, treatments are usually given to prevent these problems.
It is important to first find out if you are Rh negative in the early stages of pregnancy (ideally, before pregnancy as well). If yes, the doctor will prescribe medicines to prevent antibodies from forming and this can save the fetus from any attack.
Rh immunoglobulin (Rhlg) helps in preventing the production of antibodies. Your doctor will guide you best on what to take to make Rhlg and how to navigate the process better.
