According to a new survey, an increasing percentage of women reported trying self-fertilization methods, such as taking herbs, drinking alcohol, or even punching themselves in the abdomen. Prior to and following the Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, researchers polled American women who were of reproductive age. The percentage of people who said they tried to terminate pregnancies on their own increased to 3.3% from 2.4%.

Many people are taking matters into their own hands, according to Dr. Grace Ferguson, an OB-GYN and abortion provider from Pittsburgh who was not part in the study that was released on Tuesday in the journal JAMA Network Open. The slight rise was acknowledged by the study’s authors. However, the evidence indicates that there may be hundreds of thousands of women involved.
According to the data we have, making abortion more difficult to obtain will not make people less likely to want or require one, according to study author and University of California, San Francisco epidemiology Lauren Ralph. Women who handled their own abortions offered a variety of explanations, including wanting more privacy, worrying about the expense of clinic procedures, and wanting to try ending their pregnancies on their own first.

They mentioned employing several techniques. Certain individuals consumed pharmaceuticals, such as emergency contraception and the non-prescription abortion drugs misoprostol and mifepristone, which were acquired outside of the healthcare system. Others did drugs or drank booze. Some turned to physically damaging techniques like punching themselves in the stomach, lifting large objects, or putting things inside of themselves.
A few participants reported experiencing blood and pain, necessitating the need for further medical attention. A few claimed to have undergone an abortion in a clinic thereafter. Some said that their attempts at conception terminated in miscarriage or after the attempts, while others reported that they ended up carrying their pregnancies to term after the procedure was ineffective.
