Spain’s ‘Tourist Ban’: What You Need to Know
Due to the news about Spain’s “tourist ban” many people wonder about its nature. Tourist traffic regulation alongside measures to combat overtourism exists in Spain without instituting a complete tourist prohibitory law. To control the massive visitor numbers the Spanish government has instituted a twelve-point management program with new regulations for short-term rentals similar to Airbnb.
The new plan first focuses on providing residential spaces for residents before limiting visitor numbers in designated areas. The city of Malaga enforced a three-year holiday rental prohibition that requires existing properties without dedicated access from residential blocks to lose their licenses during this period². Under its current timeline Barcelona intends to eliminate 10,000 temporary rental units throughout the city by 2028.
Despite the new limitations Spain continues welcoming guests who want to book accommodations. The intended target of this law exists primarily to regulate homeowners who give their properties to tourists instead of local residents. Tourists continue to book from more than 13,000 registered holiday lets which operate within the Malaga municipality ³.
These measures exist to fix both overcrowded destinations alongside their insufficient basic structure and residential problem for the local population. The Spanish authorities work to build tourism infrastructure which benefits both visiting and resident populations while promoting sustainable growth for the hospitality industry over the coming years.
Travelers should proceed with their booking for Spanish accommodation while keeping informed about both latest rules and ongoing efforts to curb over-tourism. Tourists need to achieve equilibrium between tourism pleasures and sustaining local traditions while protecting the natural lands.
