This year’s annual Machail Mata pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district witnessed an extraordinary surge in pilgrim attendance, setting a remarkable record. Nearly 2 lakh devotees flocked to the Himalayan temple to pay their respects to Mata Chandi Devi during the 43-day pilgrimage, which has deep roots in tradition and draws ardent believers seeking blessings.

Pilgrimage Attendance Soars
The pilgrimage, traditionally spanning 43 days, has garnered unwavering faith among devotees over the years. This year’s turnout saw a staggering increase, with approximately 1.94 lakh pilgrims in attendance, compared to just 58,000 in 2022, as confirmed by an official spokesperson.

The Himalayan temple opens its doors each year on the auspicious Baisakhi festival in April. The Shree Machail Mata Yatra officially commenced on July 25 and immediately saw a significant influx of devotees. Notably, arrangements were made to accommodate up to 2,000 pilgrims simultaneously at the Yatri Bhawan in Gulabgarh.
Accommodation Boost
A tent city near the temple and local homestays played a pivotal role in attracting pilgrims and providing accommodations. Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner Devansh Yadav oversaw these arrangements, ensuring seamless coordination among local, civil, and police administrations, as well as other departments, army personnel, and Border Road Organisation teams.

This comprehensive approach not only catered to the pilgrims’ needs but also unlocked the tourism potential of the region. The 2023 Machail Yatra is set to conclude on September 5, marking the culmination of this year’s pilgrimage.
