The deserted, old, and narrow streets of Kuldhara hold myths, spooky legends, and tales of ghosts and supernatural events. This eerie village has been deserted since the early 1800s. A thriving community of Paliwal Brahmans has resided in the village since the 1200s. Just about 200 years in the past, the residents of Kuldhara vanished suddenly.

The background of Kuldhara

During the 13th century, a thriving population of Paliwal Brahmins resided in the community. Most of the residents used to be agricultural merchants, moneylenders, and cultivators. It was deserted by the beginning of the nineteenth century for reasons that remain a mystery. It could be caused by diminishing water resources, a seismic event, or as mentioned in local legends. Nevertheless, residents attribute it to the brutal acts carried out by Jaisalmer State Minister Salim Singh.

Salim Singh’s proposal

The villagers were against the idea of the daughter marrying the monstrous diwan. Therefore, they had to relocate right away. The village chief knew that if he did not agree to give his daughter to the evil minister and only took his family to flee, all the Paliwal Brahmins in Kuldhara and nearby villages would be killed. Therefore, the Mukhia decided that the entire population should evacuate Kuldhara and the nearby 84 villages.

He sent out messengers to inform everyone, and that evening, all the residents escaped with sorrowful hearts, leaving a curse that no one would ever be able to live there again. The whereabouts of the missing people were unknown to everyone. From that time onwards, the village has been deserted, gradually deteriorating into ruins as the years go by. It is still unknown how numerous villagers disappeared overnight.

Other mysterious stories of Kuldhara

Earthquake: Researchers proposed a theory to study the supernatural occurrences in the village of Kuldhara. They asserted that a large earthquake was responsible for necessitating the residents to move elsewhere. They believe that the manner in which the buildings fell and that the roofs of each building caved in suggest that a major earthquake was the sole likely factor. Due to the considerable destruction caused by the earthquake, it was easier for the residents to search for new accommodation and start fresh instead of reconstructing everything from scratch.

Wealth protection: Another famous story tells of the Paliwal Brahmins leaving the country suddenly one night after paying a large tax to the king to protect their wealth. They concealed their money within the neighbourhood, planning to come back and retrieve it in the future. They didn’t come back, however, the reasons are unclear. In the end, they passed away as nomads, far from their homes and riches. Therefore, their souls went back to their residence in the realm beyond.

Lack of water: Despite the widespread belief in certain myths, some historians argue that the community’s desertion was actually caused by a shortage of water, and that this occurred gradually rather than abruptly. Kuldhara had a flowing river passing through the village. Nevertheless, it slowly started to become less wet as time passed, leading to a significant drop in groundwater levels. Consequently, the residents had to find different places to live.
