Dreams in sandstone
The great Mughal Akbar’s city of victory- Fatehpur Sikhri- was named to commemorate Babur’s victory over the Rajputs there in 1527. Desigining the complex, he envisioned it would be planned as a place “where every building is a palace, every palace a dream carved in red sandstone”.
Swinging palace
The Hindola Mahal at Mandu in Madhya Pradesh is more popularly referred to as the “swinging palace” on account of its most dramatic architectural design. Its exterior looks like a sturdy fort with peculiarly sloping side walls, creating an illusion that the entire structure is swaying.
Lightning-proof
The 60 feet tall staff of the Bjli Mahadev temple, near Kulu in Himachal Pradesh, is reputed to be struck by lightning almost every year. This huge temple has been built entirely of large stones, without any use of cement or mortar.
