WhatsApp & Viber should be banned: PIL filed in SC
An RTI activist from Haryana has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) demanding the ban on social messaging apps like Viber and WhatsApp as they pose a security threat to the national security.
According to the reports, the PIL has been filed by Sudhir Yadav, an RTI activist, who has claimed that the apps are a security threat and has urged the apex court to study the matter thoroughly.
In the PIL, Sudhir has claimed that the messaging apps were helping the criminals and terrorists by their end-to-end encrypting policy.

Moreover, intercepting the messages are virtually impossible – a problem is that the investigating agencies on the trail of terrorists admitted that they are facing such threats.
Even the super-computers are unable to decipher and interpret such messages. Yadav has said that, decrypting a single 256-bit encrypted message would take hundreds of years.
The petition claimed that such apps- including Viber, WhatsApp, Hike, Telegram and Signal were posing a threat to national security and they should be banned.
A bench headed by the Chief Justice of India will be hearing the case on June 29.
