Vadodara Crash: Accused Was High on Marijuana, Not Drunk – Police
On March 13, 2025, Vadodara, Gujarat, witnessed a gruesome accident where 23-year-old law student Rakshit Chaurasia’s car collided with several two-wheelers, resulting in a dead Hemali Patel and the injury of another seven people. New forensic reports have determined that Chaurasia was high on marijuana at the time of the accident, which contradicts his original claim of being sober.
The Incident
The accident took place at about 12:30 a.m. in the Karelibaug area of Vadodara, close to Muktanand Cross Roads. After hitting several two-wheelers, Patel was pronounced dead at the scene, with injuries sustained by others, including children. Eyewitnesses reported Chaurasia behaving erratically after the accident, repeatedly shouting terms including “another round” and “Om Namah Shivay.”
Forensic Findings
Gandhinagar’s Forensic Science Laboratory found blood samples done on Chaurasia and his co-passengers, Praanshu Chauhan and Suresh Bharwad. The tests indicated that all three consumed marijuana before the incident. As Panna Momaya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, stated, “We received the result of the three blood samples today, which showed positive for drugs. They were driving the car after smoking ganja.”
Legal Pursuit
Authorities initiated the following steps in light of the forensic revelations:
Identifying those responsible and laying charges: Upon arrest after the incident, Chaurasia is still being investigated. His co-passenger Chauhan has also been arrested while Bharwad remains at large. All three have been booked under the NDPS Act.
Chaurasia will also be charged with offenses under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which penalizes DUI (Driving Under Influence) with drugs or liquor.
Counter-Claims of the Accused
In his earlier declarations, Chaurasia maintained that he had taken no alcohol or drugs. This, he insisted, was due to a pothole causing the airbags to deploy unexpectedly and obstructing his view thus leading to the crash. “We were going at 50 km/hour…The car slightly touched the other vehicle and the airbag opened suddenly, our vision was hampered and the car went out of control,” he said. But the forensic data contradicted his statements.
Community Impact and Legal Impacts
The incident has raised several issues and concerns regarding road safety and substance abuse. Legal experts are of the view that PNDS Act violations coupled with the charges against the accused under the Motor Vehicles Act may land him in severe trouble. This case also demonstrates the absolute necessity for municipalities to enforce rigorous laws concerning driving while impaired and, correspondingly, the effect increasing substance abuse has upon the safety of society.
Conclusion
The Vadodara collision reminds us about the grim consequences of impaired driving. While this case is still before the courts, the authorities must confront the triggers for substance abuse and see that justice is done for the innocent victims and their families.
