Supreme Court warns youth against drug abuse, calls for collective action to tackle rising menace
The Supreme Court on Monday raised serious concerns over the growing issue of drug abuse among India’s youth, stating that substance abuse is being wrongly seen as cool.
A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and N Kotiswar Singh made these remarks while confirming a National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigation into Ankush Vipan Kapoor. Kapoor is accused of being part of a drug trafficking network that smuggled heroin from Pakistan to India through sea routes.

Justice Nagarathna warned about the severe effects of drug abuse, highlighting how it damages the socio-economic structure and mental health of individuals. She stated that this issue could “corrode the shine of the nation’s youth” and stressed the need for urgent action. The court’s full judgment will be released later.
The court urged collective efforts from parents, society, and the government to combat the growing drug menace. It also directed the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) to take a leading role in creating a coordinated response to tackle the issue.
The bench expressed concern about the widespread availability of drugs in the country, noting that this problem cuts across all age groups, communities, and religions. Justice Nagarathna also pointed out that the drug trade is linked to terrorism and violence, destabilizing society.

The court identified peer pressure, academic stress, and cultural influences as major reasons behind the rise in drug use among young people. It cautioned against dangerous lifestyles and emphasized that escapism should not be a solution to challenges. Instead, the youth were encouraged to take responsibility for their choices and decisions.
Parents play a critical role in preventing drug abuse, the court said, urging them to provide a loving and supportive environment for their children. Justice Nagarathna noted that adolescents often yearn for love and affection, and these positive emotions can help keep them away from harmful substances.
The Supreme Court’s strong message comes as a call for immediate action to address the alarming drug abuse problem in India.
