Second stampede at Maha Kumbh kills 7, including child, chaos at Jhusi amid massive crowds
In a tragic turn of events, a second stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj claimed the lives of seven devotees, including three women and a three-year-old child, while leaving over a dozen critically injured. The incident occurred at Jhusi, about three kilometers from the Sangam nose, where an earlier stampede had killed 30 people just hours before.
According to Kalpvasi police station circle officer Rudra Kumar Singh, the crush happened due to excessive crowd pressure. Eyewitnesses reported that the tragedy unfolded around 6 AM on Wednesday when two large groups of pilgrims moving in opposite directions collided near Sector 18. The crowd continued to build for hours, creating chaos and leaving no room for movement.
Suresh Bind, an eyewitness working at the Mukti Marg electric substation in the area, described the scene as chaotic. “The crowd stormed into the substation, damaging equipment and forcing us to shut down a 400KVA transformer to prevent electrocution,” he said. Bodies were found lying at the substation gate, and the injured were rushed to hospitals.
Despite the severity of the incident, the state administration remained silent during their official briefing on Wednesday evening, only acknowledging the first stampede at the Sangam nose. The second stampede was not mentioned, raising questions about transparency.

Police officials confirmed that the identities of the deceased were being verified, and their bodies would be handed over to relatives once identified. The injured were taken to hospitals, but their condition remains unclear.
Wednesday marked Mauni Amavasya, one of the holiest days of the Maha Kumbh, attracting an estimated 76.5 million devotees to the Sangam. The back-to-back stampedes have raised concerns about crowd management and safety measures at the massive religious gathering.
As investigations continue, the tragic incidents serve as a grim reminder of the challenges of managing such large-scale events. Authorities are under pressure to ensure better safety protocols to prevent further loss of life.
