South Koreans opting for twilight divorce
South Korea has been a very traditional patriarchal society. However, over the recent years, things have begun to ease off. One result of this is an increased number of twilight divorces, as the stigma attached to this starts to wear off.
Now more and more couples are splitting off after twenty years of marriage, when they stuck on simply to comply with social mores.
According to statistics, more than 33 thousand couples split up after twenty years of marriage last year, accounting for one fourth of all divorces in South Korea.
New laws have also come into being, which help women in abusive relations to end marriages, and get entitlement in properties and earnings of their former spouses’. At the same time, women in their 50s are now finding it easier to find jobs, even though they may have been homemakers all their lives.
With all this, for a lot of women, this is the first time they are looking forward to finding new life partners who share common interests with them.
