The major environmental problem in India is solid waste management. Improper management of solid waste can be very hazardous. In research, it is found that 90% of solid waste is disposed of in open areas. Notably, landfills create a problem for the environment. The term solid waste management is used to refer the process collecting, treating and disposing of the solid waste material. The term solid waste belongs to garbage or trashes which can be any waste food material, refuse, sludge from a wastewater treatment plant, water supply treatment plant, or air pollution control facility and other discarded materials including solid, liquid, semi-solid, or contained gaseous material.

Solid waste management is about how solid waste can be converted into a valuable resource and 3R’s (recycle, reuse and reduce) is a good solution. 3R’s stand for reducing, reuse, recycle. Reduce is about using less, reuse is about using something again &again and recycle is about converting waste material into new material.
Sources of solid waste
The major sources of solid waste are from the residence, industrials, commercials, construction sites, municipal services, hospitals, and agriculture. The garbage from these places includes food waste, plastic, paper, glasses, packaging waste, medical waste, cardboard material, rubber, electronic waste, drugs, and agriculture waste.
How can we manage solid waste?
Proper solid waste management is important for the protection of public health and for the clean environment also. The most common strategy that is used, is using landfills for the disposing of the solid waste. The best thing about the landfill is the buried waste never comes in contact with the groundwater. The sanitary landfills are filled in a way so that it does not come in contact with groundwater.

Conclusion
Incineration is another method that is used for solid waste management. In this method, the waste is burned at a very high temperature until it converts into ashes. This method can be used by individual, institutions and even by the municipalities. This method also reduces the amount of waste by 20 to 30 percent.
Pyrolysis is a method in which the waste is chemically decomposed by heating in the absence of oxygen under the temperature of 430 degree Celsius. This method helps to convert solid waste into gasses, solid residue and a small amount of liquid. This method is also called as carbonization as during decomposition it leaves more carbon gas. This helps to reduce the amount of waste by more than 30percent.
