SC Asks Punjab Govt to Submit Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s Health Reports for AIIMS Opinion

SC seeks AIIMS review of farmer leader Dallewal's health amid 50-day hunger strike concerns

SC seeks AIIMS opinion on fasting farmer leader Dallewal’s health amid MSP protest deliberations

The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Punjab government to submit health reports of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on an indefinite fast for nearly 50 days. The court aims to seek an expert opinion on Dallewal’s health from the medical board at AIIMS.

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh expressed surprise over Dallewal’s improving health despite his prolonged fast. The court asked Punjab’s chief secretary to immediately submit Dallewal’s medical test reports to the Supreme Court registrar, who will then forward them to the AIIMS director for review.

Protest Details and Government Efforts

Jagjit Singh Dallewal, the convenor of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political), began his hunger strike on November 26, 2024, demanding a legal guarantee on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and other farmer-centric issues. Despite his deteriorating condition, Dallewal has refused medical assistance from the Punjab government.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Punjab, informed the court that authorities are in discussions with the protesting farmers and remain hopeful of finding a resolution. Efforts to move Dallewal to a makeshift hospital near the protest site are reportedly underway.

Sibal also mentioned that representatives from the central government are engaging with farmer leaders. On January 6, Dallewal met with a Supreme Court-appointed panel led by retired Justice Nawab Singh to explore potential solutions.

Health Concerns

Farmer leaders have expressed serious concerns over Dallewal’s health. They revealed that he is struggling to drink water, and his body appears to be moving toward multi-organ failure. His condition has become increasingly critical, with his body rejecting even minimal intake of fluids.

Protests at Punjab-Haryana Borders

Farmers have been protesting at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13, 2024. They are demanding reforms, including a legal guarantee on MSP. The Supreme Court has urged the central government to keep dialogue open and address farmers’ genuine grievances.

The situation remains tense as the Punjab government and farmer representatives work toward a resolution while the apex court closely monitors Dallewal’s health condition.
