Prashant Kishor faces backlash from BPSC aspirants, pledges support after lathi-charge sparks outrage

Patna witnessed high tension as Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) aspirants protested on Sunday, demanding a re-examination of the 70th BPSC preliminary exam and a meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The protest escalated when police used lathi-charge and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

Political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor, who had earlier extended support to the aspirants, faced backlash for his absence during the police action. The situation turned heated when Kishor arrived at Patna’s Gardanibagh to address the students but was met with chants of “Prashant Kishor, go back.”

A heated exchange followed, during which Kishor reportedly remarked, “You take blankets from us and then show us attitude,” as per reports by India Today. The comment angered the protesters, who accused him of failing to stand with them during the police crackdown.

The aspirants questioned, “Where was Prashant Kishor during the lathi charge?” and demanded he leave the site. Kishor later addressed the incident at a press conference on Monday, clarifying his stance and reaffirming his support for the students.

Kishor clarified that the lathicharge took place forty-five minutes after he had instructed students to disperse before departing the protest venue. In addition to denouncing the police action, he declared his intention to submit a formal complaint against Patna Police, pursue legal action, and consult with the Human Rights Commission.

The protests, which began on December 13—the day of the exam—have drawn support from politicians, educationists, and activists. Aspirants allege irregularities in the exam and are calling for its cancellation and re-conduction.

Kishor warned that if the demands of the protesting students are not met during a delegation meeting, he would join the protests starting January 2. He also refuted accusations by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, stating he has been consistent in supporting the students’ cause.

The protest continues to highlight the grievances of students and the growing discontent over recruitment processes in Bihar.
