PM Modi unveils INS Surat, Nilgiri, and Vaghsheer, demonstrating India’s prowess in marine security and defence innovation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three frontline naval combatants—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. These warships are a major milestone in India’s journey toward becoming a global leader in defense manufacturing and maritime security.

About the Warships:

  1. INS Surat

  • INS Surat is the fourth and final ship under the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project.
  • It is one of the largest and most advanced destroyers in the world.
  • The ship has 75% indigenous content and features state-of-the-art weapons, sensors, and network-centric capabilities.

  1. INS Nilgiri

  • The first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, INS Nilgiri, was designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau.
  • It features advanced stealth technology and reduced radar visibility, making it a significant upgrade from the Shivalik-class frigates.
  • INS Nilgiri is equipped to operate helicopters like Chetak, the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), and the newly inducted MH-60R.

  1. INS Vaghsheer

  • INS Vaghsheer is the sixth and final Scorpene-class submarine under the P75 Project.
  • Built in collaboration with the French Naval Group, it is one of the most silent and adaptable diesel-electric submarines globally.
  • The submarine can perform various missions, including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, area surveillance, and special operations.

  • INS Surat and INS Nilgiri are equipped with modern sensors and weapons, developed in India or through global collaborations.
  • INS Vaghsheer comes armed with wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and advanced sonar systems.
  • The commissioning of these naval assets reflects India’s progress in defense self-reliance and its growing maritime capabilities.
