Maha Kumbh Airfares Surge to ₹50,000, DGCA Intervenes
Maha Kumbh sees airfare surges to ₹50,000 DGCA approves 81 extra flights to manage demand
Maha Kumbh airfare increases to ₹50,000. DGCA allows 81 additional flights to control demand
The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has led to a sharp rise in airfares, with tickets increasing by almost 600%. More than 12 crore pilgrims have already attended the event since it began on January 13, and millions more are expected for key bathing days, including Mauni Amavasya on January 29.
Skyrocketing Airfares
Air ticket prices to Prayagraj have soared due to the high demand. Flights from Delhi to Prayagraj are priced at over ₹21,000, compared to the usual ₹5,000. A one-way ticket from Mumbai costs between ₹22,000 and ₹60,000, while prices from Bengaluru range between ₹26,000 and ₹48,000. These sharp increases have left many pilgrims struggling to afford the journey.

DGCA Steps In
In response, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked airlines to rationalize airfares to ensure more accessibility for travelers. Additionally, 81 extra flights have been approved for January, raising the total number of flights to 132 across India to meet the high demand.
Government Concerns
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has expressed concern over the excessive airfare hikes, emphasizing the need to make flights more accessible. “We need to delve into this issue and ensure ticket prices are fair and affordable,” he said.
This isn’t the first time airfare hikes during festive or peak seasons have drawn criticism. In February 2024, a parliamentary panel suggested guidelines to curb sudden price surges during such times.

Massive Gathering at Maha Kumbh
According to official figures from the Uttar Pradesh government, 1.17 crore pilgrims bathed at the Sangam on Sunday alone. The Maha Kumbh, held every 12 years, will continue until February 26 and is the world’s largest religious gathering.
While airlines justify the fare hikes as a function of supply and demand, critics argue it amounts to profiteering, particularly during religious and cultural events like the Maha Kumbh.
