Know the Date, History of International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation
Worldwide millions of girls and women suffer from the consequences of female genital mutilation so February 6th stands as an important day to enlighten populations about this abusive custom. The 2024 day had “Her Voice, Her Future”- Investing in Survivor-Led Movements to End Female Genital Mutilation as its main theme. The Survivor-Led Movements to End Female Genital Mutilation (”ISM” 2510047) demonstrates why survivor empowerment along with movement funding leads to ending this practice.
Female Genital Mutilation stands as a human rights violation which medical professionals now classify as a discriminatory practice against females and girls. An estimated 200 million women and girls currently alive have endured FGM across the world and if the present tendency persists 15 million additional girls between 15 to 19 years old will be affected by 2030. Youth females between infancy and age 15 are primarily targeted for this practice which results in major bleeding as well as health consequences and death risks.
Historical records show FGM existed numerous thousands of years ago while this procedure remains strong in traditional cultures worldwide. United Nations began its FGM elimination work in the 1990s and obtained recognition from the UN General Assembly by establishing February 6th as the day to combat Female Genital Mutilation.

This day exists as a critical platform that allows people to understand FGM while calling for its termination while backing victims harmed by the practice. Apart from celebrating progress in FGM abolition the day serves to strengthen vows with complete elimination and acknowledge community improvements toward FGM’s removal. The “UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme” implements efforts to speed up the abandonment of FGM while offering backing to all survivors.
This year’s theme, “Her Voice”
This theme highlights both the need to listen to survivors of FGM as well as support their leadership initiatives. This action requires support for survivors through their voice amplification and concerted teamwork.
