NASA’s Grace, gravity recovery and climate experiment was initiated in early 2002. Two satellites were used traveling 137 miles apart measuring any changes in the gravitational field on Earth in relation to the natural water aquifers.

They found 13 of the 37 Aquifers in the world are being drained at a faster rate than envisaged. Also, that the natural sustainable restorative processes have been outstripped by consumption.

There were also concerns in areas of social and political conflicts such as the Middle East, where the Arabian Aquifer System is overused. The Indus Basin is the second most overstressed system which India and Pakistan share, according to NASA.
