5 things you didn’t know about Eminent Urdu Writer Ismat Chughati
Today Google Doodle is celebrating the 107th birthday of eminent Urdu writer Ismat Chughati. In a blog post, Google wrote, the grand dame of Urdu Fiction would have been 107 today. She was often described as a courageous and outspoken writer. Back in the 1930s, she wrote on female sexuality, class conflict, subjects that were considered taboo for the age.
Here are five interesting facts about the Urdu Writer Ismat Chughati, take a look:
- Ismat Chughati was a prominent Urdu Writer of the 20th century. Later, she became a successful screenwriter and had several Bollywood hits in her kitty including Aarzoo, Sone Ki chidiya, and many more.
- She was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in the year 1976.
- She passed away in the year 1991 at the age of 76. Notably, her daughter, nephew, and niece were married to Hindus.
- She was outspoken and courageous. Her story Lihaf was one of the examples of her bold writing. Lihaf ( The Quilt) was based on a well-circulated rumor about a Begum in Aligarh who was having an affair with her female help.
- She was the ninth child out of ten children. She was mentored by her second oldest sibling who used write short stories.

She was fierce and independent. She used her pen to throw some light on the truth of messy North Indian society. A dysfunctional and barbaric place with pretension to civilization. Her material was always that surrounded her. She wrote reality and people could relate to it. At an early age, she rejected femininity. She liked doing physical work, like boys, though she was feminine in her own way. She wrote her first piece in the year 1939, Saqi, at the age of 24. Her natural and uncomplicated style of writing made her popular and made stand out in the row. Now, we need more writers like her to make this society more transparent.
