Devendra Fadnavis will take oath as Maharashtra CM on December 5 at Azad Maidan, Mumbai

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on December 5 at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan. This announcement follows his unanimous election as the Leader of the BJP Legislature Party during a meeting in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The swearing-in ceremony, expected to be a grand event, will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union ministers, and 19 chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from various states. Nearly 2,000 VVIPs and around 40,000 supporters are anticipated to gather at Azad Maidan for the historic occasion.

The decision to appoint Fadnavis as Chief Minister was finalized during the BJP’s core committee meeting. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who were central observers for the legislature party meeting, were present during this decision-making process.

Fadnavis had a significant meeting with caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at his official residence, Varsha, earlier this week. Although details of their discussion remain undisclosed, it is believed to have been an effort to strengthen ties within the BJP-led coalition and discuss the upcoming swearing-in ceremony.

The BJP achieved a remarkable victory in the November 20 Maharashtra elections, securing 132 out of 288 seats, its best-ever performance in the state. Together with allies—the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP—the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition commands a robust majority of 230 seats in the assembly.

However, challenges remain in distributing portfolios among the three coalition partners. Shiv Sena leaders have expressed interest in securing the home portfolio, citing alliance conventions. Despite this, preparations for the new government’s formation are progressing smoothly.

BJP leader Prasad Lad described the ceremony as a historic moment for Maharashtra, reflecting the coalition’s strong mandate. The BJP’s leadership emphasizes unity within the Mahayuti alliance to ensure a stable and successful government.

The oath-taking event marks Fadnavis’s return as Chief Minister, a role he previously held from 2014 to 2019, reinforcing his position as a key figure in Maharashtra politics.
