A report released by the Delhi Commission For Women mentioned there is a condom crisis at Delhi’s Red Light Area. The Delhi Government had to swing into action on its own to purchase four lakhs condoms for sex workers at GB Road. These condoms are available at its dispensary at Ajmeri Gate.
The report mentioned the central body National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) authorized to distribute the condoms. They previously distributed 12 lakh condoms per month to Delhi State AIDS Control Society. However the last four months sex workers at GB road, have not received any supply. They weren’t able to purchase these condoms on their own due to their low salary. It makes them more vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases.
DCW has approached NACO to explain the gap in supply in which also a one-time supply of 24 lakh condoms was made in May. In another incident, the Delhi Government has decided to draft a bill to regularize placement agencies to curb human trafficking in the city. Most women are brought in a pretext of giving jobs and are later sold off to work in brothels or as domestic workers.
