Surf Excel Ad controversy: Twitterati remained divided over Surf Excel Ad controversy
After #BoycottHindustanUnilever, the new advertisement for Surf Excel on the festival of Holi has evoked another controversy. For any detergent brand, Holi is an obvious opportunity to advertise its cleaning powers. But it seems the recent advertisement for Surf Excel didn’t go well with tweepals. The recent ad of Surf Excel where a Hindu girl helps her Muslim friend has evoked an extreme reaction from some right-wing quarters, who have succeeded in trending the hashtag #BoycottSurfExcel on twitter.

Surf Excel’s one – minute advertisement showcases a young Hindu girl who gets all the Holi color stains on her to protect her Muslim friend who has to go to the nearby mosque. The advertisement was released on February 27, 2019. So far the advertisement has managed to garner 8, 583, 942 and 26k thumbs up on youtube.

Well, the main idea behind the advertisement was to promote religious harmony, but a lot of people found it humiliating, Hindu Phobic and promoting love jihad. Some even went on to say that the ad wants to show that Namaz is more important than Holi.
Reacting on the controversy, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti said, “I have a better suggestion. Bhakts should be washed properly with Surf Excel. Kyunki Surf Ki Dhulai drag ko karain saaf.”

She welcomed the advertisement and said that it is important to promote Hindu – Muslim harmony and slammed Bhakts for objecting to its theme.
Recently, Hindustan Unilever Limited had also irked a controversy on Twitter. The advertisement, a son contemplates abandoning his aged father in the crowd, but soon realizes his mistake and comes back to him.
Soon after the advertisement was released, it evoked controversy and people said that it is an insult to Kumbh Mela.
