Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami condemns attacks on Hindus: All have equal rights
Due to some recent brutal acts of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh the BJI – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has come out publicly protesting against these actions, insisting on non-discrimination of citizens based on their religion.
The recent unrest has intensified after demonstration by students against government job quota; more than 400 have been killed. Protests for the opposition erupted after the overthrow of the country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who had to flee to India.
There are several media accounts of the hate and several videos showing Hindu shrine desecrations and offenses on Hindu properties including the homes and stores of followers of the faith. Some of the occurrences that contributed to this were the setting on fire and destruction of an ISKCON temple in Meherpur and the Kali temple. Ironically, two Hindu councillors were also killed during the course of this disorder.
The current amir of BJI, Shafiqur Rahman, speaking to the press said that it is improbable to deny the fact of recent aggression aimed at religious minorities, including cases of vandalism, looting, and arson. “We have been articulating our condemnation of these activities of the miscreants severally as we do again today,” Rahman said. To sum up, he appealed for citizens and members of the organization to be on the lookout and safeguard the property of every religious believer. Speaking for himself, he said, “No one is majority or minority in our country”.
Caste and religious prejudices were also denied by Rahman who believed that every citizen born in Bangladesh had equal rights to citizenship. But the question of majority or minority is not applicable in this case he said while calling on the citizens not to allow the violent elements to continue in their actions and the BJI’s readiness to fully cooperate with the police in related issues.
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council complaint that at least 54 attacks in the past on temples, houses, and commercial establishments belonging to the Hindu community and organisations such as the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, an organisation set with the purpose promoting India and Bangladeshi relations.
