Atleast 36 Killed in 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Near Nepal-Tibet Border

7.1 magnitude earthquake near Nepal-Tibet border kills 36, collapses buildings, causes widespread tremors

A powerful earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck the Nepal-Tibet border on Tuesday morning, causing widespread devastation. Reports suggest at least 36 people have lost their lives, with many buildings collapsing in the affected areas.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the earthquake’s epicenter was located in China’s Tibet region, around 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, Nepal. Lobuche, situated near the Khumbu Glacier, is approximately 150 kilometers east of Kathmandu and close to the Everest Base Camp.

Tremors were felt across Nepal, Bhutan, and India, including Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and other northern states. China’s Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported the quake as having a magnitude of 6.8, occurring at an altitude of 4,200 meters.

The worst-affected region appears to be Dingri County in Tibet, where local reports highlight very strong tremors and significant structural damage. According to CCTV, many buildings in the area collapsed, and authorities are assessing the full extent of the impact. Multiple aftershocks followed, with the strongest measuring 4.4 magnitude.

In Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, the tremor woke residents early in the morning, prompting them to rush outdoors. Jagat Prasad Bhusal, a government official from Namche, a region near Everest, said, “It shook quite strongly here, everyone is awake.”

China’s Xinhua news agency reported that local authorities are reaching out to affected townships to evaluate damages and provide aid.

The region is prone to earthquakes as it lies on a major geological faultline where the Indian tectonic plate collides with the Eurasian plate, forming the Himalayas. Such events are a regular occurrence.

The devastating earthquake serves as a grim reminder of the region’s vulnerability. In 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people, injuring over 22,000, and destroying more than half a million homes.

Efforts are underway to support affected communities and assess the extent of damage. Local authorities and rescue teams are working to provide aid and ensure the safety of residents in the impacted areas.
