Narayana convened a video conference with state-wide municipal commissioners. The video conference was attended by Director Hari Narayana, Special Chief Secretary of Municipal Administration Anil Kumar Singhal, and other key officials. The minister went over how the canteen structures were being built at different locations. He talked in-depth about their opening. One of the five files that Chandrababu Naidu signed as Chief Minister after taking office in June was to reopen the Anna canteens, which had been closed by the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) administration.

Between 2014 and 2019, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government constructed Anna canteens to serve meals to the middle class and impoverished for just Rs 5. The government named the canteens after NT Rama Rao (NTR), the founder of the TDP and former chief minister, who was referred to as “Anna” (older brother) with fondness. Chandrababu Naidu, the TDP president and chief minister, was the son-in-law of NTR. The YSRCP closed all 204 canteens after taking office in 2019 and accused corruption in the program. On the other hand, the TDP claimed that the Jagan government closed the canteens because of a personal grudge.

Following his appointment as the minister in June, Narayana had stated that the government will look into the idea of giving the Akshaya Patra Foundation food delivery work. He had previously stated that the administration was reviewing the signed contract and previous directives. The Foundation had communicated that in three weeks it will be prepared to begin supplying food to canteens.
