Chhattisgarh Encounter: 14 Maoists Killed, Amit Shah Calls It a Major Victory

14 Maoists killed in Chhattisgarh operation, Amit Shah calls it a major Naxal blow

At least 14 Maoists, including two women, were killed during a joint security operation by Chhattisgarh Police, CRPF, CoBRA, and Odisha’s Special Operation Group (SOG) near the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border. The encounter occurred in the Gariaband district on Tuesday and marked a significant blow to Maoist activities in the region.

A Maoist with a bounty of ₹1 crore was among those neutralized. Officials said the operation was ongoing and that the death toll could increase. Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the operation, calling it a “mighty blow to Naxalism” and a step toward a Naxal-free India.

The operation began on January 19, based on intelligence about Maoist activity in the Kularighat reserve forest, just 5 km from Odisha’s Nuapada district. Initial exchanges of fire on Monday led to the killing of two women Maoists and injuries to a CoBRA jawan. The operation intensified late Monday night and early Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of 12 more Maoists.

Security forces recovered a large cache of weapons, including a self-loading rifle, ammunition, and IEDs, from the encounter site.

This crackdown is part of the central government’s broader effort to eliminate Naxalism by 2026. Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated this commitment following a tragic Maoist attack on January 6, in which eight District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawans and a driver lost their lives in an IED blast in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh.

The January 6 incident, described as one of the deadliest attacks in two years, occurred on the Bedre-Kutru Road as security personnel were returning from a joint operation. Last year, in April 2023, a similar Maoist ambush killed ten police personnel and a civilian in Dantewada district.

Tuesday’s operation underscores the ongoing battle against Naxalism, with significant progress made by security forces toward restoring peace and security in affected regions.
