104 Indian migrants are deported from the United States after a dangerous journey ends in despair

In a heartbreaking incident, 104 Indian migrants were deported from the United States after their dangerous journey in search of a better life ended in failure. Most of these individuals, hailing from Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat, paid large sums to travel agents who promised them legal entry into the US. Instead, they were sent on perilous routes through South America, facing unimaginable hardships.

Harvinder Singh from Punjab’s Hoshiarpur shared his ordeal. He paid Rs 42 lakh to an agent for a US work visa, but the visa never came. Instead, he was sent to Brazil, then to Colombia and Panama, hoping to reach the US. His journey included walking through mountains for two days and surviving a boat accident that claimed one life. Another person died in the Panama jungle.

Sukhpal Singh from Jalandhar had a similar experience. He traveled 15 hours by sea and walked 45 kilometers through dangerous terrain, witnessing dead bodies along the way. Upon reaching Mexico, he was arrested and held in dark cells for 14 days.

These migrants were part of the first batch deported under US President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies. They were flown back to India on a US military plane, landing in Amritsar. The group included 19 women and 13 children, some as young as four years old.

Jaspal Singh, another deportee, revealed that their hands and legs were tied during the flight. He had paid Rs 30 lakh to an agent, only to realize it was a scam. Many families, like Kuljinder Kaur’s, sold their belongings and took loans to send their loved ones abroad. Now, they are left with crushing debts and shattered dreams.

The affected families are demanding action against the travel agents who deceived them. Authorities are investigating the human trafficking networks exploiting desperate individuals.

Upon arrival in Amritsar, the migrants were questioned, medically checked, and sent home in special buses with police security. No family members came to receive them at the airport.

This incident highlights the risks many take to migrate illegally. Punjab’s Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, and Nawanshahr districts, known as the NRI Belt, see many such attempts. While some succeed, others face tragedy.

India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has reiterated the country’s stance against illegal immigration, calling it a crime linked to organized networks. As authorities crack down on these networks, the plight of these migrants serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of illegal migration.
