WhatsApp’s encryption becomes legal in India, but for how long?
WhatsApp today launched its end-to-end encryption policy where the user calls, texts, video, images and other files sent can only be viewed by the intended recipient, not even WhatsApp has an access to the data itself.
This policy maintains once privacy but has raised Government concerns.
It will now be impossible for WhatsApp to provide Government with required data, as they themselves don’t have the decryption key.
By launching such policy, WhatsApp is creating the scenario, which Apple did in the Apple vs. FBI battle, but on a larger scale.
Designed by Open Whisper Systems, WhatsApp is using ‘The Signal Protocol’ for its encryption.
The company claims that the Protocol is developed to protect one’s private communication from third-parties.
According to media reports, the security agencies would be taking up the matter with Telecom Minister in order to seek, that proper safeguards are maintained before launching it in India.
