Solar Energy Advantages and Disadvantages
Solar Energy Advantages and Disadvantages: How it can help in increasing employment in India?
There are numerous advantages of Solar Energy. It is derived from the sun’s light. Notably, the sun is a powerful source, and this energy can be used by installing solar panels. You will amaze to know that the energy that it gives to earth in just 1 hour could meet the global energy needs for one year? It is a renewable energy source but the only limitation of solar power is our ability to turn it into electricity in an efficient and cost-effective way.
What is solar energy?
Solar energy is the energy which is produced by Sun in the form of light and heat. Interestingly, it is one of the most renewable and available sources of Energy on the planet earth. It has been used by people since ancient time. Solar energy can be converted into heat energy or electricity.
Ways to convert them into heat energy and electricity
Solar energy is the energy harnessed by the sun. It is harnessed in two 2 ways.
Let us understand how solar energy can be used? Firstly, understand how it is harnessed?
1. Through Production of electricity
The technique utilizes solar cells that convert solar energy into electricity. Photovoltaic or commonly known as PV devices, the produced electricity right from the sunlight through an electronic process that naturally occurs in particular material types known as semiconductors.
2. Solar Collector devices
A Solar thermal collector harnesses heat by absorbing the Sun rays. This technique uses the sun’s energy to heat up water for home use such as water heaters, hot tubs, and swimming pools. Notably, the solar energy converted into electricity can be instantly used to power lights and many other devices. Solar cells generally generate a direct current type of electricity.
How to use them for different purposes?
Solar energy can be used for different purposes such as Solar Powered Water Heater. Instead of using an electric heater, you can use it. Charge them during the sunniest days and they will keep the water warm throughout the coldest days.
Heat pools and Tub
Solar panels can heat your pool and hot tub the same way they heat water in cylinder tubes and water heaters. A lot of us don’t get our pool heated due to a huge cost involved. But with solar energy, it won’t cost you so much.
Advantages of Solar Energy
1. Renewable Energy Source
Among all the benefits, the biggest benefit of Solar energy is that its renewable energy source. It can be harnessed in all areas of the world and is available every day. Notably, we cannot run out of solar energy as long as we have Sun
2. It can reduce Electricity bills
Your electricity bill can drop. Since a lot of your electricity needs can be met by solar energy. You will be able to save the electricity bill, but if you will generate more electricity than you use, the Surplus would be exported back to the grid and you will receive bonus pay for that amount.
3. Technology Development
The technology advancement and improvements will intensify in the future. The innovations in quantum physics and nanotechnology can potentially increase the effectiveness of solar panel.
Disadvantages of Solar Energy
1.Cost
The initial cost of buying a solar system is fairly high. Their prices might go down in the future but currently, it is not possible for everyone to buy it.
2. Weather Dependency
The efficiency of the solar system drops on a cloudy and rainy day. Solar panels are dependent on sunlight. Therefore, rainy and cloudy days can adversely affect solar energy
3. Its storage is expensive
It has to be used right way, or it can be stored in large batteries. These batteries, used in off the –grid solar systems, can be charged during the day so that it can be used at night. The cost involved in it is high.
Conclusion
Solar energy has a great future. After Solar panels have been installed, the operational costs are quite low compared to other forms of power generation. Fuel is not required which means solar power can create large amounts of electricity without the uncertainty.
