Researchers: Facebook cannot win over ad blocks

Researchers, which also includes an Indian-origin researcher, have created an experimental ad in order to show that social media giant Facebook has no chance to win the war it started on ad blockers.

When the Facebook Ad Highlighter has been installed, then the ads in the News Feed are greyed out and written over with the words like “this is an ad.”

Last week, Facebook has made an announced that it was taking up some measures to prevent ad blockers from working.

Two days after Facebook’s announcement, Adblock Plus, one of the biggest ad blocker has informed users of a simple tweak in their settings that would further defeat the social media websites’ blocker blockade.

In a blog post, Arvind Narayanan from the Princeton University in the US wrote “what is actually happening here is that the Facebook’s HTML code for the ads has slight differences from the code for regular posts, so that the social media can keep things straight for its own internal purposes.”

“But, on the other hand, because of the open nature of the web, Facebook is now forced to expose these differences to the browser and to the extensions such as Adblock Plus. The line of code also allows Adblock Plus to distinguish the two categories by further exploiting those differences,” Narayanan wrote.

Researchers created a kind of prototype tool that, will also detects Facebook ads without further relying on hidden HTML code to distinguish them, ‘MIT Technological Review’ reported.
