What is the BBC row?
Gary Lineker is a popular media figure in Britain. In a recent tweet of his, he criticised the government’s migration policy, following which the BBC suspended him.
He had called the policy cruel and said it “ directed at the most vulnerable people in a language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s.”
His suspension sparked support from other presenters who believed that he was wronged and that free speech should be allowed. This forced the BBC to rethink its decision and welcome back Gary.
Is this the first instance of abuse on Twitter?
Social media in itself is a platform that allows for a lot of hate, trolls and abuse. But, instances of abuse on Twitter is not a new thing. From other famous celebrities to common men, everyone confronts some sort of abuse for what they tweet.
According to a BBC article that exclusively covered an insider story from Twitter, it said that the employees feel that protecting users from trolling or disinformation has become extremely difficult due to the lay-offs and changes under Elon Musk. The article reads- “features intended to protect Twitter users from trolling and harassment are proving difficult to maintain, amid what they describe as a chaotic working environment in which Mr Musk is shadowed by bodyguards at all times.”
Elon Musk acquired Twitter in 2022 and ever since he has taken over the company, he has bought multiple changes. More currently, Twitter has been seeing massive layoffs of employees and a difference in the functioning of the system.
In the latest step to combat misinformation on the platform, Musk has rebranded and started the ‘Community Notes’ to:-
Fight for truth, whole truth & nothin but! https://t.co/wB5zfqykxe

With all the new changes and challenges, it remains to be seen how Musk manages Twitter and deals with trolling and abuse on the platform.
