Prishika Visits Mrs. Parmar: A Warm Welcome

As Prishika arrives at Mrs. Parmar’s home, she is greeted with a warm smile and open arms. The joy on Mrs. Parmar’s face is evident as she welcomes Prishika back, recalling the fun they had during their previous cooking session where they made Khaman.

“How are you, Mrs. Parmar?” Prishika asks with her usual enthusiasm.

“I’m doing great, Prishika! I watched the video of our Khaman recipe, and my children loved it! They especially enjoyed the flavors. After such a wonderful experience, I thought we could tackle Modak together, especially with Ganesh Chaturthi around the corner,” Mrs. Parmar replies.

Prishika beams, “That sounds like a fantastic idea! Modak is such a significant part of the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Let’s head to the kitchen and start our cooking adventure!”

The Journey of Modak: A Festival Favorite

As they make their way to the kitchen, Prishika inquires, “Mrs. Parmar, could you share a little about your journey with Modak? How did it become such a beloved sweet in your home?”

Mrs. Parmar smiles nostalgically, “Modak and Ganpati are synonymous with celebrations in our household. For us, Ganesh Chaturthi is as grand as Diwali. The preparations, the decorations, and especially the food – it’s all about celebrating the presence of Bappa (Lord Ganesha) in our home. Modak has always been my family’s favorite. My grandmother used to make them during the festival, and I have continued the tradition. It’s a sweet that’s filled with love, devotion, and memories.”

With these heartfelt words, they begin the process of making the perfect Modak.

Modak Recipe: A Step-by-Step Guide

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup jaggery (gud)
  • 2 cups grated coconut
  • 2 cups rice flour
  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 1 pinch nutmeg powder
  • 1 pinch cardamom powder
  • Water as needed

Preparation:

  1. Preparing the Rice Dough:
    • Start by boiling 1 glass of water in a pan. Once the water comes to a boil, add the rice flour gradually, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
    • Mix the rice flour well in the boiling water until it forms a smooth dough. Transfer this dough to a steamer for further cooking.
    • To use a kadhai as a steamer, pour some water into the kadhai and place a stand in the center. This setup allows the steam to circulate and cook the dough evenly.
    • Once the dough is steamed, remove it from the heat and place it on a greased plate. Knead the dough thoroughly, ensuring there are no lumps. Add a little cold water if needed to make the dough smooth and pliable.
  2. Preparing the Sweet Coconut Filling:
    • In a separate pan, heat some ghee or oil. Add the jaggery and let it melt over low heat.
    • Once the jaggery has melted, add the grated coconut and mix well.
    • Allow the mixture to cook until it thickens slightly and the coconut absorbs the jaggery. Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less jaggery according to taste.
    • Add a pinch of nutmeg powder and cardamom powder for flavor. Optionally, you can also add some chopped dry fruits like almonds and cashews to enhance the taste.
    • Let the filling cool down completely before using it.
  3. Shaping the Modak:
    • Grease a Modak mold with ghee to prevent the dough from sticking.
    • Take small portions of the rice dough and shape them into balls.
    • Press the dough ball into the Modak mold, ensuring it covers the sides and creates a hollow in the center.
    • Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling into the hollow and seal the Modak by covering the top with more dough.
    • Carefully remove the Modak from the mold and set it aside. Repeat the process for the remaining dough and filling.
  4. Steaming the Modak:
    • Place the prepared Modaks in a steamer or a kadhai setup used earlier.
    • Steam the Modaks on high flame for about 10 minutes. The Modaks will turn slightly translucent when fully cooked.
    • Once done, remove them from the steamer and let them cool slightly before serving.

Serving and Offering:

After steaming, the Modaks are ready to be offered to Lord Ganesha. Mrs. Parmar arranges them on a plate, adding a touch of reverence as she places the plate in front of the idol. With folded hands, she offers the Modaks to Ganpati Bappa, invoking blessings for her family.
