National Curriculum Framework 2023: Biannual Board Exams Enhancing Competency Assessment and Curriculum Reforms

The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for School Education in 2023, introduced by NCERT, aims to revolutionize the examination system by implementing a two-board exam structure. This change will offer students the flexibility of taking final exams twice a year, aligning with the National Education Policies vision. The NCF envisions achieving this through the creation of an extensive “test item bank,” facilitating test generation using appropriate software. This move towards on-demand exams addresses the limitations of the current system, which lacks options for students to choose when they are prepared or to retake exams they miss.

Competency-Centric Shift:

The existing board exam model predominantly evaluates memorization rather than holistic competency. The NCF highlights this narrow focus and the need for a shift towards assessing the competencies specified in the curriculum. The goal is to provide a comprehensive and accurate overview of student performance. The framework emphasizes that boards should formulate and execute unbiased and dependable testing techniques that gauge competency achievements.

Curriculum Reforms:

Furthermore, the NCF proposes changes in the curriculum for Classes 11 and 12. Students will be required to study two languages, with at least one being an Indian language. The framework encourages a departure from traditional streams like Arts, Science, and Commerce, promoting a broader range of subject choices to enhance flexibility. This progressive approach aims to promote a more comprehensive and meaningful education system that aligns with modern educational philosophies and addresses the shortcomings of the existing evaluation process.
