The Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has admitted the appeal challenging Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification. Firstly, Phogat requested to be allowed to participate in the gold medal match in the category of the womne’s 50kg weight division, however, this remained a wish as America’s Sarah Hildebrandt had already clinched the slot.

In her second appeal, Vinesh asked CAS to award her as a joint-silver medalist and this can happen. The CAS will reconsider her appeal and the best scenario will be she coming back to India as the medalist.
The star Indian wrestler was on a roll at the Paris Olympics having shifted from the 53kg to 50kg category five months earlier.
Vinesh Phogat was disqualify from her gold medal bout of the women’s 50kg weight category as she was found to be 100gm overweight on the day of the bout. Therefore, Yusneylys Guzmán who had been defeated by Phogat in the semifinals moved to the finals and lost to America’s Sarah Hildebrandt.

Vinesh Phogat’s appeal will be conducted through the internet. For the CAS hearing, Joelle Monlouis, Estelle Ivanova, Habbine Estelle Kim, and Charles Amson, pro bono lawyers of the Paris Bar for the Paris 2024 Olympics will be representing her.
In case Vinesh wins the appeal she is going to be fond a joint silver medal. In any case, if she loses, the disqualification will remain so, and this means that she will come last.

Coming out of the Paris Olympics 2024 Wrestling competition a day earlier, Vinesh Phogat declared her retirement from wrestling on X. She would go down in history as the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the finals in women’s wrestling category at Olympics.
