Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) against her disqualification in the wrestling final at the Paris Olympics 2024. The Indian wrestler’s decision to move came when she was disqualified from the women’s 50kg category finals due to being 100 grams over the weight limit. CAS has requested that the final decision be provided by Thursday morning, August 8th. If CAS rule in Vinesh’s favor, the IOC must give Vinesh a shared silver medal.

Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling

Vinesh Phogat revealed on Thursday that she is retiring from wrestling. This happens the day following her potential disqualification from the 50kg division finals at the Paris Olympics 2024 due to exceeding the morning weigh-in limit by 100 grams. Vinesh made history as the first Indian female wrestler to advance to the gold medal match in her category on Tuesday night.

India had 3 medals, with everyone hoping Chanu would increase India’s medal count, but she was unable to do so. Failing to lift 114 kgs in her final attempt, she missed out on moving to second place and ended up in fourth, narrowly missing a spot on the medal podium. This would have been Chanu’s second consecutive Olympic Games in which she won a medal, following her silver in Tokyo 2020 with a total lift of 202 kg.

 Avinash Sable lost the final of 3000m steeplechase

Avinash Sable, an Indian runner, did not win a medal in the 3000m steeplechase event of athletics at the Paris Olympics 2024. Sable advanced to the finals by placing fifth in the second heat of qualifying, clocking in at 8 minutes 15.43 seconds. However, he clocked in at 8:14.18 in the final race, securing an 11th place finish. He was the first Indian male player to compete in the event’s finals.

Sri Lanka created history by defeating India

Sri Lanka achieved a historic victory over India in a one-day international series for the first time in 27 years since 1997. With the win, Sri Lanka won the series 2-0. India, needing 249 runs, crumbled to a total of 138 in just 26.1 overs, due to Dunith Wellalage taking five wickets and Maheesh Theekshana’s spin.
