Tilak Varma’s Rare ‘Retired Out’ Dismissal in LSG vs MI Sparks Debate: What Really Happened?
Tilak Varma’s ‘retired out’ call during LSG vs MI IPL match sparks massive debate. Here’s what happened and other rare instances of this dismissal.
Tilak Varma’s ‘Retired Out’ Controversy During LSG vs MI: What Triggered the Rare Tactical Call and Who Else Has Faced This Unusual IPL Dismissal?
The 2025 IPL clash between Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians at the Ekana Cricket Stadium left cricket fans and analysts on social media buzzing in regard to a rare debatable incident. Chasing a stiff target of 204, MI found themselves needing 29 runs from the final 12 deliveries, with six wickets in hand. On the crease was Tilak Varma, who was struggling at 25 from 23 balls, as Shardul Thakur served a sensational 19th over, conceding only seven runs.
What followed stunned viewers and cricket pundits alike: MI’s Impact Player Tilak Varma was called back into the dugout and replaced by Mitchell Santner. The act was by all definitions and interpretations an unprecedented tactical substitution, classified as ‘retired out’ in cricket and, consequently, highly rare. Given that, it seethed over debates concerning its fairness, intent, and impact on the psychology of the concerned player.
According to MCC Law 25.4.3, a batter who has retired for any reason other than injury or illness can only resume that innings with the consent of the opposing captain. If they do not return, their dismissal shall be recorded as ‘retired out’-a legal but a contentious move.
The innings at a slow pace of Varma had obviously hurt Mumbai Indians’ momentum. Though Suryakumar Yadav tried to anchor the chase with an impressive 67, eventually he was out to a risk scoop before Hardik Pandya joined Varma while MI was still in the fray, when Thakur’s tight over forced the think tank to go for an aggressive switch-and thus was a decision to send in Santner for Varma.

The move was perfectly within the law, but drew immediate ire. Social media was inundated with emotional expressions supporting Varma’s cause. One user commented: “I know cricket is a team game, but let’s be real, this ‘retired out’ move is gonna stay in Tilak Varma’s head for a while.” Another posted, “Tilak Varma won matches for MI and now he is treated like this? Pathetic.”
It was not only the public that was divided; cricket experts too found themselves at odds. Criticizing the act was Harbhajan Singh, who questioned Santner’s ability with the bat compared to Varma. Hanuma Vihari and Irfan Pathan voiced out the same confusion, while some fans argued that MI had every right to experiment tactically in a high-stake game.
MI’s global head of performance Mahela Jayawardene later explained the reason behind the decision. According to him, Varma had not managed to accelerate although he had spent much time on the crease with the bat. “He was struggling. It was a tactical decision. We needed someone fresh who could go after the ball straight away,” laid down Jayawardene. Hardik Pandya too came to support the call by saying it was a tough but necessary decision: “Some days you try, but the runs just don’t come. We win as a team, we lose as a team,” he added.

In spite of all the brave attacks, a first in this respect-the batter being declared retired out-was not the one happening in IPL. Up until Tilak Varma, only three other players fell under the same category:
*Ravichandran Ashwin (vs Rajasthan Royals) vs LSG in April 2022
*Atharva Taide (vs Punjab Kings) vs Delhi Capitals in May 2023
*Sai Sudharsan (vs Gujarat Titans) vs Mumbai Indians in May 2023
Such incidents are legal, but remain controversial in a sport where personalized, intimate connect with players is often more important than strategy. As the IPL evolves with new formats, rules and bold decisions, debates like this will probably proliferate.
