Sunil Gavaskar’s Candid Advice to Rohit Sharma Before Champions Trophy Final
Sunil Gavaskar advises Rohit Sharma to bat longer in the Champions Trophy final to help India post big scores.
Sunil Gavaskar Urges Rohit Sharma to Bat Longer and Lead India to a Big Total in the Champions Trophy Final
India is once again in the final of an ICC event and faces New Zealand in a clash full of pressure on the eve of the Champions Trophy final on Sunday. The form of the team has been superb, praised for its all-round performance, but has been scored by many for captain Rohit Sharma in terms of not converting starts into scores.
Rohit’s Batting Approach Under Scrutiny
Rohit has a total of 104 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 107.21 during this tournament. Much of the time, it has resulted in his dismissal after a decent innings. His forays into aggressive batting styles result in cheap dismissals. While head coach Gautam Gambhir defended Rohit, judging that the team would evaluate players by impact rather than statistics, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar had another view.
Gavaskar’s Message: Bat Longer, Score Bigger
According to Gavaskar, if Rohit could stay on the crease for a little longer, it could ensure that India was banking on a consistent total of over 300 runs. Speaking to India Today, he made it clear that “if Rohit bats for 25 overs, there are good chances of someone having a score of 350 or beyond.” Emphasizing that aggression is an integral part of his game, Gavaskar said, however, that a little discretion in hitting would make it a more impactful and match-winning role.

A Call for Consistency and Responsibility
So far, Rohit’s highest score in this tournament has only been 41 against Bangladesh. All other scores are below expectations because he had gotten 20, 15, and 28 after facing Pakistan, New Zealand, and Australia, respectively. Being a senior batter and leading the side given his capacity, Gavaskar states, Rohit should not be satisfied with such 25-30 runs but should rather focus on batting longer and leading by example.
The Secret of India’s Success in the Final
With the Indian team in the run-up to the final of the Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma becomes even more important. He could very well single-handedly take the game away from New Zealand if he can balance aggression with responsibility and stay longer at the crease. His ability to set the foundation for a big total will be pivotal in India’s quest for another ICC trophy.
