‘Sorry Ruturaj’ Trends as CSK Faces Humiliating Defeat Against KKR: Did Fans Judge Too Soon?
CSK’s loss against KKR under MS Dhoni's captaincy sparks 'Sorry Ruturaj' trend, as fans regret blaming the injured skipper for earlier defeats.
Sorry Ruturaj’ Trends as CSK Crumble Under Dhoni’s Leadership Against KKR in IPL 2025 – Are Chennai Super Kings Heading for a Meltdown?
There must have been a hum of excitement on the Chepauk stands as MS Dhoni returned as captain to lead Chennai Super Kings in place of injured Ruturaj Gaikwad. But what was expected to turn into an evening nostalgic for reliving vintage Dhoni magic was soon a nightmare for CSK supporters, as the Kolkata Knight Riders mercilessly laid bare CSK’s vulnerabilities. Batting first, CSK managed a mere 103/9, their lowest-ever total at home, while KKR chased that down in just 10.1 overs, losing just 2 wickets. This, being a colossal loss, marked the fifth defeat on the trot for CSK in IPL 2025, hence plunging the franchise closer to the bottom of the points table.
There was a dramatic change in the crowd’s sentiment. The very social media gang that had mocked Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy now trended with a strong ‘Sorry Ruturaj’ in a show of contrition. Hitherto, the 28-year-old was blamed for CSK’s poor season, while Dhoni’s captaincy return now proved the issue was beyond leadership.
Apparently, Ruturaj Gaikwad was playing with a lot of pain. The opener suffered an elbow fracture when he was struck by Tushar Deshpande of Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30. Stephen Fleming, the coach, stated that Ruturaj had a set of inconclusive X-rays followed by an MRI, which eventually revealed a fracture in the area of the radial neck. Ruturaj probably even took steroid injections to numb pain and played for two more matches, which shows his commitment and guts.
Now that the fans are seeing the bigger picture, they have taken to social media to apologize and appreciate Gaikwad’s durability. “Ruturaj played three matches with a fractured elbow, ran on adrenaline and sheer willpower. That kind of dedication deserves respect, not criticism,” wrote one fan on X. Another said, “He’d still be the best batter out there even with one hand. We owe him an apology.”
Around that time, some of Dhoni’s captaincy decisions started to be questioned. Fans began to criticize his decision to send non-specialist batters up the order ahead of himself and questioned the team’s inability to adapt under pressure. The match versus KKR saw CSK break a multitude of unwanted records, including their biggest defeat (of 8 wickets) in terms of balls remaining, and their third consecutive loss at home.

There, then, is yet some candle-burning. IPL history is replete with miracles. No more than last season, Royal Challengers Bangalore put themselves on a rocky road by losing six out of their first eight matches till they utterly stunned the world by turning around with six consecutive wins to the playoffs. If RCB could reach the u-turns, CSK, with its strong core and experience, wont go down the race easily — especially should Ruturaj recover on time.
This past Friday night saw the Yellow Army’s heartbroken state, but it also reminded the fans that cricket is a team sport. An individual cannot be blamed for the loss — and that too for a player who risked his health for the team. CSK’s fate this season may just hang by a thread, but if there’s one franchise that can rewrite that story, it is surely CSK.
