Simona Halep Banned for Four Years For Anti-Doping Rule Violation

In a surprising turn of events, the 31-year-old Romanian star Wimbledon star player Simona Halep was banned in October 2022 after testing positive for doping blood booster Roxadustat at the U.S. Open last year. 

The first charge related to  AAF for the prohibited substance Roxadustat at U.S. Open 2022 carried through the urine test during competition,” the ITIA said in a statement. Halep has strongly denied knowingly taking the harsh substances and she said the drug has entered her system from a licensed supplement.

Simona Halep was crowned the world’s No. 1 tennis player in 2017 and played the best tennis of her professional career when she won her first Grand Slam after beating Sloane Stephens in the final of the French Open in 2018 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, Her prolific run continued in 2019 when she overwhelmed USA’s gun tennis player Serena Williams in the final of Wimbledon 6-2,6-2. 

The tribunal accepted Halep’s argument that they had taken a contaminated supplement but determined the volume the player ingested could not have resulted in the concentration of Roxadustat found in the positive sample
