Shreyas Iyer’s Recovery Update: Suryakumar Yadav Shares Hospital Details, Says Everything Is Normal But Under Observation
In a recent statement, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav shared positive news about Shreyas Iyer’s health following what media reports described as a “life-threatening” injury. The Indian batter, who was rushed to a Sydney hospital after a shocking on-field accident, is now recovering and in stable condition. Suryakumar revealed that Iyer has been responding to messages and is being kept under observation for a few more days as doctors continue to monitor his progress.
Iyer’s fall during the third ODI between India and Australia left players and fans in shock. While attempting a difficult catch, he landed awkwardly and was immediately attended to by the medical team. According to reports, Iyer’s vitals dropped dangerously, prompting his admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Scans later revealed internal bleeding due to a laceration of the spleen, a serious and potentially fatal condition.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Call and Update on Iyer’s Condition
Addressing the media, Suryakumar Yadav said, “We spoke to him. When we got to know about his injury, I called him. Then I realised that Shreyas didn’t have his phone with him, so I reached out to our physio Kamlesh Jain. He assured us that Shreyas was stable.” Surya went on to add that Iyer has been communicating for the past two days, which is a strong indicator of recovery. “If he’s able to reply on the phone, then he’s stable,” Suryakumar explained.
He also mentioned that the medical team and BCCI have been extremely supportive during this phase. “Doctors are there with him; everything is looking good. Everything is normal, but he will be kept under observation for a few more days,” Surya confirmed.
How the Team Reacted to Iyer’s Injury
Recounting the moment on the field, Suryakumar shared how the team initially assumed that Iyer’s injury was not serious. “When we saw it from outside, it looked like he was fine after taking the catch,” he said. “Only those who were near him on the field could understand the impact. Once he went into the dressing room, they realised he needed urgent medical care. Then he was rushed to a specialist, and that’s when they found out about the internal injury.”
The situation was tense, but the quick response from the medical staff ensured Iyer received immediate treatment. Fortunately, after being stabilised in the ICU, his condition started improving steadily.
Iyer’s Spirit and Suryakumar’s Optimism
Despite the severity of the incident, Suryakumar found a way to inject positivity into the conversation. “Doctors and physios said it was an unfortunate injury; this is quite rare. Shreyas is also a rare talent. Rare incidents happen with rare talent,” he said with a smile. His words reflected not only the relief within the Indian team but also their admiration for Iyer’s resilience and fighting spirit.
Surya further added that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely involved in Iyer’s care. “BCCI is in full support, and we will take him home alongside,” he said, expressing confidence in Iyer’s complete recovery.

His determination to recover mirrors his attitude on the field — fearless and committed.
For now, Suryakumar Yadav and the rest of Team India are staying connected with Iyer, hoping to see him back in action soon. As Surya said, “He’s been talking to everyone, so it’s good.” The cricket community continues to send prayers and support to Shreyas Iyer, whose journey to recovery is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sports and the strength of human spirit.
