Ruturaj Gaikwad Steps Aside, Shows Faith in ‘Young Wicketkeeper’ MS Dhoni to Lead CSK’s Comeback in IPL 2025

The IPL 2025 season saw an extremely turbulent beginning for the Chennai Super Kings, as when circumstances couldn’t get worse, an injury to skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad arrived to make things worse for the much-touted side. A painful blow to his elbow from a Jofra Archer bouncer left Gaikwad, the captain and opening batter for CSK, injured during the game against the Rajasthan Royals on 30th March in Guwahati. This very blow, later declared as an elbow fracture, ruled Gaikwad out for the season.

Though understandably bummers for the fans, the franchise made a historical return and reinstated their most trusted leader, MS Dhoni, as the captain. The veteran cricketer, affectionately known as ‘Thala’, is set to wear the hat of captaincy once again with a legacy of leadership, cool temperament, and uncanny abilities to conjure miracles upon the field.

Although wishing things were different, Gaikwad, in the video shared through CSK social media, showed great character and sportsmanship to be standing tall beside Dhoni. He humorously referred to the 43-year-old legend as a “young uncapped wicketkeeper”: “Yes, we have been struggling for a while. But, you know, now that a young wicketkeeper is leading the team, hopefully, things will change.”

Gaikwad’s statement resonated within the fan circle where his comment was seen humorous as well as hopeful. He, however, acknowledged CSK’s early troubles, which have seen the team secure just one win in five matches, and went on to stress that Dhoni’s return in that role could be their help.

He expressed extreme regret in that video for not being able to contribute more this season but vowed that he would be with the team for support. “I’m going to be there with the team to support them. I definitely would have loved to take this team out of the current situation. But, some circumstances are not controllable,” he said.

Despite having been sidelined, Gaikwad has a firm vow with the team: “I’ll continue to support the team from the dugout, and hopefully, we’ll have a great season ahead.”

MS Dhoni is the greatest captain in IPL history by general consensus, and during his tenure, CSK added five championship titles while building one of the most consistent franchises to compete in the league. Escaping from the 9th position goes through Dhoni’s experience and command on direction that places CSK in contention for playoffs.

As fans rally around Dhoni, and the organization attempts to emanate their momentum, Gaikwad’s humble going-away and his trust in the leadership of the ‘young’ Thala have only solidified the emotional bond between the franchise and its supporters. With Dhoni back at the helm, CSK fans dare to dream of another special turnaround.
