Finally, those on-field cricketer brilliance finds its voices off the field. Afghan two huge cricket stars, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi, voiced their words against the long repression of their motherland amid the most stringent restriction the Talibans imposed against its womenfolk. The catalyst for their outcry was the Taliban announcement on the ban on medical education for women in Afghanistan. This effectively shut down the last remaining avenues of advanced academics for Afghan women. For many people, the medical education halted marked the broader regime campaigns to strip Afghan women of all their rights and opportunities. To this end, Afghanistan’s renowned cricketer Rashid Khan could not hold his mouth shut anymore. His frustration would resonate with that of several others, particularly since a sector that had so long offered hope for Afghan women is now being restricted in what it can offer.

Another prominent figure in Afghan cricket is Mohammad Nabi, who has expressed his outrage on this decision. Both cricketers voiced their frustrations through all the social media platforms, which made this a rare moment of defiance. It was a major development, as these athletes never uttered a word when the Taliban took extreme actions against Afghan women, such as banning women’s cricket and not allowing women to take part in any sport activities. Their silence had been a disappointment to many, but now, their vocal opposition to the ban on women’s medical education signifies a shift in their stance.
Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan after the withdrawal of US forces, the country has experienced a series of repressive actions that have adversely affected the lives of women. Women have been barred from taking part in most aspects of public life, including going to gyms, working in different sectors, and even speaking out in public. Such restrictions have attracted worldwide condemnation, but until now, hardly anyone from Afghanistan, especially those in the public eye, dared to challenge the regime.
The move by Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi at a time when the international world has strongly condemned the moves of the Taliban. This has impacted cricketing relations of Afghanistan as well. Australia, for example, cancelled two bilateral ODI series with Afghanistan due to the policies of the Taliban. However, as a gesture of solidarity with Afghanistan’s women, the Australians have announced that next year, they will be staging a match against Cricket Without Borders XI comprising Afghan women living in Australia.
Rashid and Nabi’s newfound outspokenness is a beacon of hope for many in Afghanistan, particularly women who continue to fight for their rights under a repressive regime. Their voices represent a growing resistance that could inspire others within Afghanistan and across the world to stand against the Taliban’s oppressive measures.
