Ranked 39th and a former finalist at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, the 31-year-old Pliskova made a strong return to the court in Brisbane, marking her first appearance since September due to a left wrist injury that cut short her 2023 season. Despite acknowledging areas for improvement, Pliskova expressed satisfaction with her season debut, stating, “A lot of things to improve, but a good start.” She played with her left wrist and hand taped during the opening match at Pat Rafter Arena. In the subsequent match, top seed and defending Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka secured a convincing 6-3, 6-0 victory over Lucia Bronzetti of Italy. The action continued with second-seeded Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, scheduled to face Olivia Gadecki in a night match. As for Osaka, her journey takes a unique turn with an exhibition match scheduled on Rod Laver Arena, the main court for the Australian Open, in Melbourne next week. This exhibition promises to be a significant tune-up for Osaka as she readies herself for the challenges of the upcoming Grand Slam event.
