After making history in the Olympics in Paris, Manu Bhaker declared, “It was a long overdue medal for India.” She put an end to India’s 12-year drought for an Olympic shooting medal. Though she had been the first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal, the 22-year-old seemed hungry for more. On Sunday, the young gunman was the talk of the country. But three years ago, after falling short of expectations and returning home from her first Olympics empty-handed, Manu Bhaker shed many tears. In her first Games, she participated in three events, but things did not go as planned.

The tragedy in Tokyo was too much to bear. Manu Bhaker thought shooting was monotonous in 2023 and that it was “like a 9 to 5 job” for her. When Manu was fourteen years old, she lost the spark that motivated her to take up the firearm. She desired to give up the sport and go overseas for her further study. Manu’s ambition to be the greatest in the world appeared to be waning despite her participation in the Indian national team and her high-level medal wins. Manu, however, refused to give up.

At that moment, Manu decided to give her former coach and accomplished tactician Jaspal Rana a call. Rana granted her wish for a reunion. It arrived three years following the two parties’ public spat. After burying their differences, the coach and the shooter resumed their collaboration. Once more, the fire was started. The next major objective for Manu was the Olympics in Paris, so he was locked and loaded.

For the first six months of 2022 and 2023, I thought of this as a 9 to 5 work. Furthermore, I dislike repeating the same actions every day. I become tired with it. Before leaving for the Paris Games, Manu Bhaker in an interview. “It just does not give me the kick.” “At that point, I thought, ‘Okay, I am still on the team, I am doing alright, but it is not bringing me any joy or happiness.'” That seemed like a good time for me to take a break, concentrate on my education, enroll in college, and spend some time studying overseas. I gave it a lot of thought,” she continued.
