Lakshya Sen scripts history, 1st Indian to reach Olympic men’s singles semis
Lakshya Sen, a young shuttler from India, made history on Friday, August 2, when he stormed into the men’s singles semifinals of the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. The 22-year-old Almora athlete outlasted the Taiwanese player ranked 11 in the world with incredible tenacity. In the meantime, after losing their matches on Thursday, PV Sindhu and the team consisting of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were ousted from the Games.
After defeating Taiwan’s Chou Tien Chen 19-21, 21-15, 21-12, Lakshya became the first Indian shuttler to get to the men’s singles semifinals. Returning to Sen, he made a tremendous comeback throughout the match after dropping the opening set and changed his style of play to win the next two games handily. His skill and tenacity, displayed through key smashes and calculated play, earned him a spot in the semi-finals and significantly raised India’s chances of winning a medal at the current Olympics.

Lakshya Sen walked into the pre-quarterfinals of the Olympics on Wednesday, literally turning on the style with his fantastic strokeplay. But one shot in particular, which left everyone, including his opponent Jonatan Christie, dumbfounded, was a jaw-dropping behind-the-back return. The youthful talent was also commended by Anand Mahindra and Harsh Goenka for his outstanding performance.
He stated, “I think this is something that I have ever dreamt of,” in an interview with reporters. It is a very pleasant feeling. The true test is here, and there is a lot of work ahead of us. I have 48 hours to rest and prepare for the upcoming game. I have to put all into it. I attempted to get the game going because he was skilled at the net.”
Sen will next face the victor of the semifinal match between Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and 2021 World Champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore, according to PTI.
