Shocking! Indian cricketers who may retire from ODIs after India-Australia Test series

India cricketers who may retire from ODIs after the India-Australia Test series

In the cricket world, it is often debated that the ODI format is losing its significance somehow and is the most vulnerable to losing its viewership.

However, from the point of view of the cricketers, participating in all the 3 formats of the game, at times, gets too hectic for them, and they are compelled to sideline themselves from one of the formats at least.

In this article, you will come to know about 10 such cricketers who might just as well want to bid farewell to ODI cricket, right after the ICC 50-overs cricket World Cup, later this year in India.

VIRAT KOHLI

A modern-day legend for the youth and one of the most popular names, Virat Kohli, is also in the list surprisingly. By the time the World Cup 2023 begins, the right-handed batter would have already turned 35 and the star batter might just call time on his graced ODI career.

He also made his intentions clear about giving all to help the team India win the upcoming 2023 World Cup.

Virat Kohli gave up his captaincy to team-mate Rohit Sharma back in 2022, stating workload management, after a lot of cacophonies following the India cricket team’s continuous disappointing outings in ICC events since 2013.

SHIKHAR DHAWAN

The Indian star cricketer has done well for India in ICC events, and also not to mention Shikhar Dhawan was the Player of the Series in the team’s successful campaign during the Champion’s Trophy of 2013.

However, if Dhawan is unable to maintain consistency in the coming few months, it might be hard for the management to book a place for him in the World Cup squad. But since he is an experienced cricketer, India will surely consider that, along with his ability to build innings right at the top.

Dhawan’s retirement, if it happens in any scenario, could be attributed first due to Shikhar Dhawan’s growing age, (secondly) because he is not being very consistent with his performances, and (third), due to the rise in several budding cricketers from the domestic circuit knocking the doors for a selection.

ROHIT SHARMA

Another behemoth of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma is regarded as one of the most awesome openers in the history of cricket. His performance during the 2019 World Cup had the entire world become his fan.

Even if the Men in Blue didn’t make it to the Final, Rohit was rightly nominated for the ‘Player of the Series’ for that edition.

However, ever since he took over the full-time captaincy from Virat Kohli, he could be seen struggling to strike a balance between his captaincy duties and batting. The skipper will be over 35 during the World Cup this year and may contemplate retiring from ODI. The impact and value that he brings to the game and team are massive and will be thoroughly missed if he bids adieu to the format and the news of his retirement will be one of the biggest shockers in the cricket world in 2023.

RAVINDRA JADEJA

One of the biggest match-winners for team India in all formats, be it with the bat, the ball, or even when it comes to his fielding skills, Ravindra Jadeja has been India’s all-rounder. Not to mention his coming-of-the-age innings in the semi-final clash of 2019 against New Zealand where the entire top-order of India collapsed within 2 overs.

However, the talismanic 34-year-old might just call time on his ODI career, after the World Cup. However, the age is still in his favour but the main concern for him is his extreme vulnerability to injuries. He has been ruled out of the team several times due to injuries, and very recently, he was out of action for India for a very long time.

So maybe keeping health and fitness in mind, it may not come across as a surprise if Jadeja snaps off his ties with ODI cricket after the World Cup.

MOHAMMED SHAMI

Another player on this list is Mohammed Shami who emerged as a crucial pacer for India. However, currently, his performance on Tests recently was not up to the mark.

In the 3rd Test, Mohammed Siraj replaced Shami as he is also becoming an emerging pacer for the team.

With Shami who has already reached 33, many young pacers are executing a marvellous performance and might grab Shami’s spot in team India and might Shami think of retiring then it will happen probably after the ongoing IND vs AUS 4th Test.

JAYDEV UNADKAT

Another player who may retire from Tests after IND vs AUS 4th Test is the left-arm seamer, Jaydev Unadkat. He made a comeback in Tests after almost 10 years and is now a part of the IND vs AUS Test series but has not been given a chance so far.

With Umesh Yadav’s spectacular performance in the previous Test, he is expected to regain his spot in the 4th Test which makes it a bit hard for Unadkat to get back to the World Test Championship final squad if India qualifies and may think of Test retirement after India vs Australia Test series.

KL RAHUL

After a dismal performance in two Tests, the right-handed batsman KL Rahul was dropped from the playing XI and was also removed as a vice-captain recently. Due to his poor performance in Tests over a long period, he became a talking point for many experts and fans, who also demanded his removal from the team.

And now with Shubman Gill’s amazing form, it looks like Rahul may not get a place as an opener in Tests again in near future and also will not be picked as a wicketkeeper too as he lacks expertise with gloves.

Hence, KL Rahul may retire as well from Tests after IND vs AUS 4th Test.
